2013_lake_recreation_sched

In 2013, University Lake and the Cane Creek Reservoir will have a new schedule for boating, fishing, picnicking, sunbathing and other recreation.

  • The Cane Creek Reservoir will be open on Fridays (except the Good Friday holiday) and Saturdays from 6:30 AM to 6 PM.
  • University Lake will be open on Saturdays and Sundays for the same hours.

In the 2010 through 2012 recreation seasons, University Lake was open from Fridays through Sundays and the Cane Creek Reservoir was open on Saturdays. With the schedule change in 2013, both lakes will normally be open two days per week through mid-November.

After experience in 2013, the OWASA Board will further evaluate the schedule as part of an overall review OWASA’s lake recreation program.

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Location of OWASA’s lakes

University Lake is on the west side of Carrboro near Jones Ferry Road. The recreation area is at the end of University Lake Drive, which can be reached via Old Fayetteville Road south of Jones Ferry Road.

The Cane Creek Reservoir is about 8 miles west of Carrboro on the north side of NC 54, just west of Stanford Road.

Safety

Lake patrons are encouraged to put safety first. OWASA’s lakes are alcohol-free.

Life jackets are generally available for adults and children, and OWASA does not charge for use of its life jackets. Some people may need to use their own life jackets due to unusual size or other special conditions. Lake users are required to use life jackets under safety rules.

Fishing

University Lake and the Cane Creek Reservoir are stocked with bass, crappie, catfish and a variety of sunfish. A State fishing license is necessary except on July 4th.

OWASA offers canoes and flat-bottomed boats for rent.  Citizens may use small private boats if they are brought on a car or in a truck. (Trailers are not allowed.) The limits on private boats are intended to help prevent aquatic weeds, which cause problems for fish and in water treatment, from being introduced into the reservoirs.  For this reason, boats must be cleaned of mud and vegetation and inspected by OWASA.

To help protect water quality, OWASA allows only electric motors, which are also inspected.

Citizens with disabilities will receive assistance from OWASA staff as needed to enjoy boating and using the lake recreation area. University Lake has a fishing pier for people with disabilities.

Holidays

The lakes will be open for the Memorial Day, July the Fourth and Labor Day holidays. The lakes close on Good Friday holidays.
