OWASA, Anna Maria’s and the American Red Cross will sponsor a blood drive from 11 AM to 3:30 PM in the Community Room at the OWASA Administration Building, 400 Jones Ferry Road, Carrboro.

OWASA will dedicate the blood drive in honor of Engineering Technician Sandy Beckham, who will retire on September 1st with 32 years of service to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community. In 1982, Mr. Beckham began OWASA’s Blood Drive program as a way for OWASA employees to contribute to the community. His initiative and compassion resulted in over 80 OWASA-sponsored blood drives and the donation of over 1,000 pints of blood for the American Red Cross.

In his career at OWASA, Mr. Beckham’s responsibilities have included preparing designs and cost estimates for in-house water and sewer projects; helping to develop OWASA’s Geographic Information System into a highly effective tool for organizing and using OWASA’s infrastructure data; preparing traffic control plans; inspecting construction; reviewing developers’ water/sewer plans; and doing land surveys.

“The generosity of Mr. Beckham and the other OWASA employees has helped save thousands of lives. They realize there are patients in need and they continue to respond,” said Ray Richardson, American Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative for the Carolinas Blood Services Region.

Todd Spencer, OWASA’s Engineering Manager for System Development, said ”Sandy Beckham’s tireless support and personal commitment to OWASA’s blood drive goals have made a difference in our community’s blood supply and helped make a difference to a countless number of folks over the past 29 years.  OWASA owes a great debt of gratitude to Sandy for his commitment to this valuable community service throughout his career.”

There is a need for all blood types, particularly type O negative.
