William “Dusty” Martin, Operations Supervisor at OWASA’s Jones Ferry Road Water Treatment Plant (WTP), recently received the NC Waterworks Operator Association’s 2012 award as A-Surface Operator of the Year.

(An “A-Surface” water plant operator is one who has received the highest North Carolina professional certification for operating a plant that uses water from a lake, river or other surface waters.)

The OWASA Board of Directors will recognize Mr. Martin for his award in the Board meeting tonight at 7 PM in the Chapel Hill Town Hall, 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

As OWASA’s Plant Operations Supervisor since April, 2007, Mr. Martin oversees the daily operation of the Jones Ferry Road plant with a treatment capacity of 20 million gallons per day and a staff of seven plant operators. He is a leader in the OWASA WTP team that earned a national award in 2011 for excellence in water treatment.

Before joining OWASA, Mr. Martin served as a WTP operator in Lee County and at the Apex-Cary Water Treatment Plant, where he was promoted to Water System Operator with responsibilities for both the water pipe system and the treatment plant.

In 2001, Dusty became Chatham County’s Water Distributions Supervisor and managed the daily operation of the County’s WTP. He then worked for the Town of Siler City as WTP Superintendent from 2004 to 2007.

Mr. Martin has earned State professional certifications in both water and wastewater treatment and operation of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

He chairs the North Piedmont Section of the NC Waterworks Operator Association (NCWOA) and serves on the NCWOA Executive Committee. Dusty has taught in the NCWOA operator schools and has been a presenter at NCWOA seminars.
