John A. Young, a business executive with extensive experience in corporate development, finance and marketing, took the oath of office as an OWASA Board Member Thursday night. The Chapel Hill Town Council appointed Mr. Young to the OWASA Board.
Mr. Young’s experience includes:
- directing a multi-year business improvement program as Chief Operating Officer of the Visiting International Faculty (VIF) Program, a mission-driven enterprise based in Chapel Hill which advances education and cultural exchange.
- leading the creation of innovative businesses, products, and market strategies at HP/Compaq (Vice President, General Manager and founder of strategic worldwide business units; and Director of Product Management) and at Red Hat (Vice President for Marketing), which helped generate 30% to 90% year-over-year growth on revenues ranging from $70 million to $4.5 billion.
- leading strategy and business improvement projects, as Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company, for Fortune 500 senior management teams, including those at two investor-owned electric utilities.
- mentoring business leaders participating in the University of North Carolina’s Business Accelerator for Sustainable Entrepreneurship (BASE) program.
He earned a Master of Business Administration degree as a Fuqua Scholar at Duke University in 1990; and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics Engineering, magna cum laude, from Yale University in 1980.
Mr. Young sings in the Chapel Hill Community Chorus. His wife, Kenlyn, is completing a Master’s degree in Nutrition at Meredith College. They have two children: Alex and Anna.
