Our community's wastewater system includes about 294 miles of public sewer mains, 24 pump stations and a wastewater treatment plant. The sewers and pump stations receive wastewater from homes, businesses, etc. and carry it to the Mason Farm Wastewater Treatment Plant on the southeast side of Chapel Hill. The Mason Farm plant's rated treatment capacity is 12 million gallons per day (calculated as an average flow for a month). Highly treated wastewater, also called “reclaimed” water, is returned to the natural environment at Morgan Creek. Morgan Creek flows to Jordan Lake, which is a water supply for several communities in the region.
