Due to water line work by OWASA, travel on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will be limited to two lanes at the Hillsborough Street intersection between 9 PM and 5 AM from Monday, August 14th to Friday the 18th. Two-way traffic to the north and south will be maintained on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard through the intersection.
The changes due to the OWASA work also include:
- Turns will not be allowed from Martin Luther King Jr. to Hillsborough Street and from Hillsborough Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
- Drivers on eastbound Umstead Drive will not have direct access to Hillsborough Street.
- There will be a detour route for access to Hillsborough Street via Bolinwood Drive.
- Drivers northbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will not be able to turn left to Umstead Drive.
The map below shows the locations of the work area, lane closings and detour.
After the intersection work from August 14th to the 18th, OWASA’s contractor will install temporary pavement, which may be bumpy, at the work area. Later this year when OWASA’s work is completed at the intersection, the contractor will install the smooth final pavement.
“We ask for your patience and understanding during these temporary changes in travel and access,” said Simon Lobdell, OWASA’s Project Manager. “The work at the intersection is part of our water pipe replacement in Hillsborough Street from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to a point near North Street. This work is needed to help maintain reliable water service, including water for fire protection when needed.”
