16 Feb OWASA’s Orange County Creek Week Events
OWASA is celebrating Orange County’s Creek Week (March 14-20, 2022) with two special events!
Cane Creek Reservoir Bird Walk
March 16, 2022 – 8 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
March is a great a time to go birding and Cane Creek is the top eBird hotspot for Orange County! Local birding experts, Karen Hogan and Kent Fiala, will guide you through a variety of habitats, including the lake, a creek, fields, and woodland areas, to some of the best birding spots along the shore of Cane Creek Reservoir. You might see songbirds, waterfowl, or raptors like ospreys and bald eagles. Last March, they recorded over 70 unique bird species at the Reservoir and surrounding woodlands!
Bring sturdy shoes or, better yet, boots, binoculars if you have them, and a cell phone for reporting your bird observations on eBird, a citizen science website run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Dress warmly as temperatures at the Lake are usually a little colder.
This event is appropriate for all fitness levels. There are some paved sidewalks, gravel roads, and grassy ground with gentle slopes.
Cane Creek Reservoir is located at 8705 Stanford Rd. Come through the entrance on the north side of NC-54, west of Stanford Rd. and meet us in the parking lot
RSVP by emailing info@owasa.org, please include your name and how many people will be in your party.
Tour the Wastewater Treatment Plant
March 17, 2022 – 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Join OWASA’s Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Supervisor Wil Lawson to learn how the water you send down the drain becomes a valuable, reusable resource! The Mason Farm Wastewater Treatment Plant uses physical, chemical, and biological processes to treat wastewater to a very high level before releasing it into Morgan Creek or for use as reclaimed water for non-drinking purposes.
Participants are required to wear closed toe, walking shoes (no heels), and masks. Due to COVID precautions, this tour will be mostly outside.
This free event is appropriate for most fitness levels. Participants will need to climb stairs and navigate over narrow walkways.
The Wastewater Treatment Plant is located at 170 Old Mason Farm Rd. in Chapel Hill. Come through the gate and park at the Administration Building.
Sign up today! Limited to the first 15 people who sign up.
RSVP by emailing info@owasa.org, please include your name and how many people will be in your party.
